Vector vs Raster for Sign Artwork, and Which File Types Are Truly Print Ready

Vector artwork stores shapes as mathematical paths, so it prints identically at 2 inches or 20 feet. Raster artwork stores a fixed grid of pixels, so it has one true size and gets soft when you enlarge it. For sign printing, the truly print ready formats are AI, EPS, SVG and PDF when they carry live vector data, plus TIFF and PSD when the artwork genuinely is photographic. JPEG and PNG are not print ready formats, they are delivery formats, and a logo supplied as either one is a logo you will have to redraw.

What is the real difference between vector and raster?

A vector file describes a circle as a centre point, a radius and a fill. A raster file describes the same circle as a list of coloured pixels. When you scale the vector, the software recalculates the curve at the new size and the edge stays perfectly crisp. When you scale the raster, the software has to guess what colour to make the new pixels in between, and the edge becomes a soft ramp.

That is why the failure is always visible on type and logos and often invisible on photographs. A photograph is a field of continuous tone, so interpolation blends smoothly into it. A logo is a hard edge, so interpolation produces a fuzzy halo along every boundary. Enlarge a JPEG logo four times and you will see it immediately at reading distance.

Does a PDF guarantee vector artwork?

No, and this trips up more people than any other file question. A PDF is a container. It can hold live vector paths and embedded fonts, or it can hold a single flattened 72 DPI JPEG that somebody exported from a slide deck. The extension is the same either way.

Two checks take ten seconds. Zoom in to 1600 percent in a PDF reader: vector edges stay razor sharp, raster edges break into blocks. How does file type interact with resolution and colour?

Vector solves resolution but not colour. A vector logo scales to any size, yet its colours still have to be converted to the printer’s ink set, so a vector file built in RGB will shift on press exactly like a raster one. MCAD sets out the working space question plainly: RGB is a light based space with a wider gamut, CMYK is an ink based space with a narrower one, and out of gamut colours have to be mapped to something printable.

Raster solves neither on its own. Poster Print Shop sets out the resolution requirements for large format work, and a raster file has to satisfy them at final size before anything else is worth discussing. And when the job involves cutting, format becomes a hard limit rather than a quality one: Avery describes die cutting and kiss cutting as blade paths through defined layers, and a blade cannot follow a colour transition.

What if I only have a JPEG or a PNG of my logo?

You have three options, in descending order of quality. Ask whoever designed it for the vector original, since almost every logo was drawn in vector at some point. Have it redrawn as vector, which for a typical logo is quick work and permanently solves the problem. Or print it as raster and accept the size ceiling, which is workable if the image is genuinely large and the sign is viewed from a distance.

Automatic tracing tools are a fourth option and usually a trap. They produce vector paths that look approximately right and are full of wobbles, stray nodes and colour banding that become obvious at sign size. When does the file type change what is physically possible?

Whenever the job involves cutting. Contour cut decals, kiss cut stickers, cut vinyl lettering and routed panel shapes all need a real path for the blade or router to follow, and a path can only come from vector data. A raster file has no edges in the geometric sense, only colour transitions, so there is nothing to cut along.

The same applies to spot white ink, spot gloss and any other layer that has to be defined as a separate shape. These are specified as named vector layers in the artwork. Should I outline my fonts?

Yes, or embed them in the PDF. Outlined type can never substitute or reflow, which removes the single most common cause of a sign printing with the wrong typeface.

Does converting a JPEG to EPS make it vector?

No. It wraps the same pixels in a different container. Only redrawing or tracing produces genuine vector paths, and tracing needs cleaning up by hand.
