Custom T-Shirt Printing: How DTF Transfers Work

Direct-to-film (DTF) printing has quietly become the most flexible way to put full-color artwork on garments – no screens, no minimums, no color limits. Here is how it works and when to use it.

The process in plain terms

Your design prints in reverse onto a special film, gets coated with a powdered hot-melt adhesive, and is then heat-pressed onto the garment. The result is a thin, stretchy, washable print that bonds to cotton, blends, and polyester alike – dark or light fabric, it does not matter, because DTF lays down a white underbase automatically.

Why shops love it

Unlike screen printing, one shirt costs the same per print as fifty, and every shirt in the run can be a different design. Unlike direct-to-garment, transfers can be pressed onto hats, bags, hoodies, and sleeves. Photographic detail, gradients, and tiny lettering all reproduce cleanly.

Caring for DTF prints

Wash inside-out in cold water and skip the high-heat dryer cycle. Treated gently, a DTF print outlasts most screen prints – the film is engineered to stretch with the fabric instead of cracking.
