What DPI Do You Actually Need at Sign Size? 150 vs 300, and Why File DPI Tags Are Meaningless

For most signs you need 100 to 150 DPI at final printed size, not 300. The correct number is set by viewing distance: under 6 feet aim for 200 to 300, from 6 to 12 feet 100 to 150 is plenty, and beyond 12 feet you can go lower still. The DPI number stored inside your file is metadata and tells you nothing on its own. What matters is pixel dimensions divided by the printed size in inches. A 3000 pixel wide image is a 3000 pixel wide image whether the file says 72 DPI or 300 DPI.

At 6 feet, that is 72 inches, so 6,878 divided by 72 is about 96 DPI. Anything beyond that is invisible to the viewer standing there.

Why is the DPI tag in my file meaningless?

Because it is a note attached to the pixels, not a property of them. A 3000 x 2000 pixel photograph contains six million pixels regardless of whether the metadata says 72, 150 or 300 DPI. Setting the tag to 300 in an image editor without resampling changes the suggested print size, not the image. It is the digital equivalent of relabelling a two litre bottle.

The same arithmetic is why print resolution guidance is always tied to output size. Large format guidance consistently frames the requirement as DPI at final printed size rather than as a fixed number, because a file that is generous at 18 inches wide is inadequate at 96.

If the number comes out short, the fix is a bigger source file, not upscaling. Enlarging an image invents pixels by interpolation, and while modern upscalers are impressive on photographs they do nothing useful for logos, type or hard edges. What about vector artwork?

Vector art has no resolution. It stores shapes as mathematical paths, so it prints identically at 2 inches or 20 feet. Every logo, every piece of type and every cut line should be vector wherever possible. This is why a supplied EPS, AI, SVG or vector PDF is always preferable to a PNG, however large the PNG is.

Is there a trick for building very large files?

Yes, and it is standard practice. Build the artwork at a fraction of final size with the DPI multiplied by the same factor. A 10×30 foot wall graphic at 150 DPI would be 18,000 by 54,000 pixels, which most software will not handle comfortably. Build it at one tenth scale, 12 x 36 inches, at 1500 DPI, and the effective resolution at full size is identical while the file stays manageable.

Two rules when you do this. Keep all effects, strokes and type live rather than flattened so nothing is baked in at the wrong scale. And state the scale factor clearly in the file name, because a file that says one tenth scale in its name will never be printed at the wrong size by mistake.
