Custom LED neon sign installed above a bar

LED Neon vs Traditional Glass Neon: Which Sign Should You Buy?

Walk into any bar built before 2010 and you will probably see real glass neon humming away over the taps. Walk into one opened last year and odds are the glow is coming from LED neon flex. Both look great from ten feet away, but they are very different products underneath, and the right choice depends on your budget, your wall, and how long you need the sign to run. We sell LED neon every day at GetQuickSigns, so we will be upfront about our bias, but we will also tell you honestly where glass still wins.

What each technology actually is

Traditional neon is a glass tube, bent by hand over a flame, filled with neon or argon gas, and lit by a high-voltage transformer. It is closer to craft glasswork than to modern electronics, and that is exactly why people love it.

LED neon is a flexible silicone or PVC tube packed with LED chips, mounted on a clear acrylic backboard and cut to the shape of your design. It runs on a low-voltage adapter, plugs into a normal outlet, and mimics the continuous glow of gas neon closely enough that most customers cannot tell the difference at normal viewing distance.

The head-to-head comparison

Here is the short version we give customers who call us trying to decide:

  • Price: custom glass neon typically runs $300 to $2,000 and up, with oversized work passing $2,500, per Metro Center Sign Works’ 2026 pricing guide. Our premade LED neon signs start at $199.99 for a 20 inch design like the Pizza Brah sign.
  • Lifespan: LED neon is typically rated around 50,000 hours, while glass neon generally needs service after roughly 10,000 hours, per this lifespan comparison.
  • Power draw: LED neon flex pulls roughly 3 to 4 watts per foot versus about 20 watts per foot for glass tube, per Neon Filter’s energy guide.
  • Voltage: glass neon runs on transformers in the 3kV to 18kV range, while LED neon uses a low-voltage input, per Engineering World’s breakdown. Low voltage matters if kids or customers can reach the sign.
  • Durability: glass shatters in shipping and installation. LED neon tubes flex. We ship LED signs nationwide without the crate-and-pray routine glass requires.
  • Features: nearly every LED neon sign we sell is dimmable with a remote out of the box. Glass neon needs extra hardware for that.

Where glass neon still wins

We are not going to pretend glass is obsolete. The gas-lit glow has a depth and warmth that purists can spot, especially up close. If you are restoring a vintage storefront, matching existing glass work, or you want the sign itself to be a piece of craft art, glass is the right call, and you should budget accordingly for both the sign and periodic transformer or tube service. There is a reason the classics have survived a century.

Where LED neon wins for most buyers

For everyone else, the math is hard to argue with. The whole market has already voted: LED-based signs now account for roughly 65 percent of the neon sign market, which is projected to grow from $2.53 billion in 2025 to $3.63 billion by 2032, according to Coherent Market Insights.

Cost over time, not just up front

A sign that costs less to buy, uses 80 to 90 percent less electricity per Voodoo Neon’s efficiency testing, and lasts around five times longer before service is a different financial product than glass, even before you price a single repair visit. We broke down the broader numbers in our 2026 sign price index if you want to see how neon compares to other sign types.

Practicality

LED neon hangs like a picture frame. Pre-drilled acrylic backing, included hardware, standard outlet. No electrician, no permits for an interior sign, no warm-up time, and barely any heat coming off the face. For a bedroom, office, or event backdrop, that is the whole ballgame.

So which should you buy?

If you want heritage and have the budget for craft glasswork plus maintenance, find a good local glass bender. If you want the look, the low bills, and a sign that survives a courier, go LED. You can browse all 145 of our ready-made designs in the shop, from the space-themed Apollo sign at $219.99 to big 59 inch statement pieces, and every one of them ships free.

Want a design that is completely yours? We build custom LED neon signs from your text, logo, or artwork. Tell us what you have in mind on our custom neon signs page and we will send you a proof and a quote, usually the same day.
