Buying a Neon Sign on Etsy vs Direct: What Actually Changes

Here is a disclosure you do not see often in posts like this: we sell neon signs on Etsy too. GetQuickSigns runs an Etsy shop alongside this website, same signs, same production, same people answering messages. So this is not a hit piece on Etsy, which we think is a genuinely good marketplace. It is an explanation of what actually changes when you buy the same neon sign on a marketplace versus directly from the seller’s own site, using our own listings as the example.

The same sign usually costs more on Etsy

Marketplaces charge sellers for the storefront. Etsy’s published rates include a 6.5 percent transaction fee on the order total plus payment processing around 3 percent and 25 cents, per Etsy’s fee policy, and sellers enrolled in Offsite Ads pay a further 12 to 15 percent on attributed orders. Sellers do not absorb that; they price it in.

You can see it in our own catalog. A few real examples at the 20 inch size:

Same physical product, roughly 15 percent apart. Across our whole 145-design catalog that gap holds, which on a large 50 inch sign can mean a difference of more than $150.

What Etsy genuinely does well

Fairness requires this section. Etsy gives you buyer protection through its purchase program, reviews you can read in one place, and easy comparison across hundreds of neon shops. If you have no idea who to trust yet, a marketplace with built-in purchase protection is a reasonable place to be cautious. We keep our Etsy shop open precisely because plenty of buyers prefer that safety net, and we honor the same quality either way.

What buying direct gets you

• The lower price, as above, because no marketplace commission is stacked on top.

How to vet any neon seller, anywhere

Wherever you buy, the checklist is the same. Confirm the material is LED neon flex on acrylic, not glass, unless glass is what you want. Ask for the size in numbers, not photos, since wide-angle product shots flatter small signs. Check that a power adapter and remote dimmer are included rather than sold separately. And make sure someone will answer for the sign in year three; LED neon is rated around 50,000 hours, per this lifespan comparison, so the relationship should outlast the checkout.
