Standoff Mounted Signs: A Complete How-To

Standoffs are the polished metal barrels that float a sign an inch off the wall – the mounting style behind nearly every upscale lobby logo. The hardware looks intimidating, but the install is a weekend-DIY job.

What a standoff actually is

Each standoff has three parts: a wall-anchored base, a barrel that threads onto the base through a hole in your sign, and a cap that clamps the sign face. The sign hangs on four (or more) of these, spaced just inside its corners, with the gap creating a shadow line that makes the sign appear to float.

Pairing hardware with material

Standoffs shine with acrylic signs – the clear edge and polished barrel are the classic combination – but they mount aluminum and PVC panels just as well. Our acrylic builder can pre-drill standoff holes in standard corner positions, so the sign arrives ready to hang. Hardware comes separately: a 50-count standoff box in polished silver or anodized black covers a dozen typical signs, which is why sign shops keep a box on the shelf.

The install, step by step

Tape the sign to the wall and level it. Mark through the pre-drilled holes, set wall anchors rated for the sign weight, and screw in the bases. Thread each barrel over its base, rest the sign holes on the barrels, and hand-tighten the caps – snug, never cranked, especially on acrylic.

Spacing rule of thumb

Keep holes 1 inch from each edge on signs up to 24 inches, and add a center standoff on any edge longer than 36 inches to prevent bowing. A four-standoff square sign under 30 pounds needs nothing more than quality drywall anchors.
