How to Install an Acrylic Sign with Standoffs

Standoff-mounted acrylic signs look like a professional install – the sign floats about half an inch off the wall on four polished aluminum posts. The good news: you don’t need a professional to hang one. With a drill and a level, most signs go up in about 30 minutes. Here’s the exact process.

What you’ll need

  • Your sign and the standoff hardware (barrels, caps, and screws – included with standoff orders)
  • Drill with a 1/2″ bit (check your anchor size)
  • Drywall anchors rated for at least 10 lbs each (unless you hit studs)
  • Level (a phone level app works)
  • Painter’s tape, pencil, and a tape measure

Step-by-step installation

  1. Pick the height. For lobby signs, put the vertical center of the sign at 57–60″ from the floor – standard eye level. Behind a reception desk, center it in the wall space above the desk instead.
  2. Tape up a template. Hold the sign (two people for anything over 24″) or a paper cutout of it against the wall, level it, and mark the four mounting hole centers with a pencil. Painter’s tape on the wall first makes marks easy to see and erase.
  3. Double-check with the level. Measure both top marks from the ceiling or floor – matching distances beat eyeballing.
  4. Drill and anchor. Drill at your marks and tap in drywall anchors. Hitting a stud? Skip the anchor and drive the screw directly.
  5. Mount the barrels. Screw the standoff barrels to the wall through the anchors – snug, not gorilla-tight.
  6. Hang the sign. Line the sign’s holes up with the barrels, then thread each cap through the sign into its barrel. Start all four caps loosely before tightening any of them – it lets the sign settle level. Finger-tight plus a quarter turn is plenty; overtightening can stress acrylic.

Pro tips

  • Clean the wall and the sign face after install – see our note on cleaning acrylic without scratching it
  • On brick or concrete, use a masonry bit and plastic sleeves instead of drywall anchors
  • Large signs (36″+) are a two-person job – one holds, one marks
  • Keep the protective film on the sign until it’s on the wall

FAQ

Do I need to find studs?

No – a 3/16″ acrylic sign is light, and four quality drywall anchors carry it easily. Studs are a bonus, not a requirement.

What if my holes are slightly off?

Standoff caps have a little forgiveness built in. If a hole is way off, drill a new one 1″ away, anchor it, and hide the old hole behind the sign.

Can I take the sign down and rehang it?

Yes – unscrew the caps, lift the sign off, and the barrels stay on the wall ready for rehanging. Handy for repainting.
