Designing a Clear Acrylic Sign: Mark White, Printed and Transparent Areas
Quick answer: Label which areas should remain transparent, which should print white and which contain color. A white-looking screen background does not settle that choice.
Make the background an explicit instruction
Clear acrylic, printed white and a white wall behind the sign can look similar in a small mockup. They behave differently when the wall color or lighting changes. Add a background key to the proof so the production decision is not inferred from appearance.
| Proof area | Intended result | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | Wall visible through panel | Confirm clear area |
| Printed white | Opaque white artwork or field | Confirm white ink |
| Printed color | Approved color artwork | Confirm backing treatment |
GetQuickSigns’ standard custom printed acrylic product is 3/16-inch clear acrylic with second-surface printing and a white underbase. Custom transparency or other treatments need confirmation with the quote. Do not assume that a specialty effect is included.
Build a production file and a viewing proof
- Keep text and logos as vectors where possible.
- Identify the finished dimensions and orientation.
- Keep critical text clear of holes and edges.
- Provide an annotated proof showing the intended wall-facing and viewer-facing sides.
- Ask which white-ink setup is required before building extra masks.
For example, a 24 × 18-inch panel with a centered 18 × 10-inch logo leaves three inches at the left and right and four inches at the top and bottom. Those are layout margins, not mounting-hole specifications. The actual hardware layout still needs approval.
Keep realistic expectations for the proof
A monitor preview can show positioning, spelling and the intended clear areas. It cannot reproduce every reflection or the exact interaction between the installed sign and a colored wall. Include a photo of the intended wall when appearance is important.
Common questions
Should I mirror the artwork myself?
Submit readable artwork unless the approved production instructions specifically request a mirrored file.
Is raised gloss included?
A standard second-surface acrylic print is not a promise of raised or textured gloss. Ask for that effect separately.
